Union Medal – Jenny Gill
The BOU’s Union Medal is awarded to those who have made an outstanding contribution to the BOU
Professor of Applied Ecology,
University of East Anglia
“Jennifer Gill is a leading ornithologist who has made substantial developments to a range of issues in ecology and conservation.”
“A chance opportunity to watch a nearby flock of Black-tailed Godwits in the Blackwater Estuary, whilst she was on the way to help set up an experiment, provided enjoyable birdwatching and set in train thoughts that changed her life. Disturbance was still a critical issue and the combination of Black-tailed Godwits, who were considered particularly vulnerable, and the Essex estuaries, which were considered highly disturbed, provided an excellent research combination.”
“She is a driving force in the support of early career researchers and she used this during her term as BOU President as the focus to rejuvenate and modernise the BOU.”
