Habitat Creation and Restoration:
| A British Ornithologists' Union Autumn Scientific Meeting
supported by Defra, Natural England and The RSPB Meeting detailsThe success of restored or newly created habitats for wildlife conservation is often mixed. As biodiversity targets require an increase in certain vulnerable habitats, there is a need for sound science to underpin the practical management actions taken on the ground. Against a background of a rapidly changing environment, the creation of new wildlife habitats is moving up the political and conservation agendas. The talks in this conference will undertake a critical review of progress in the field of habitat creation, covering a wide range of habitats and taxa, including marine and freshwater wetlands, heathland, woodland, grassland and arable areas. After a scene-setting session, there will be a series of paired talks about the five different habitat types. The first talk of the pair will be delivered by a policy leader in the subject who will outline the drivers, constraints, opportunities and future priorities for each habitat, while the second will be a case study which will outline the practical aspects of successful habitat creation and restoration. Following these case studies, will be a series of talks considering the ecological processes which are crucial to successful habitat creation. Adaptation and mitigation to climate change and the roles of ecological networks, reintroductions and translocations in creating habitats that support ecological functions that fall within the range of natural habitats will be discussed. The conference will end with two talks that summarise our current state of knowledge and provide some challenges and a clear agenda for future research. The programme for this event is being organised by Dr Phil Atkinson (BTO), Dr Malcolm Ausden (RSPB), Mr Andy Brown (Natural England), Dr David Bullock (National Trust), Mr Phil Grice (Natural England), Dr Mark Rehfisch (BTO) and Mr Andy Swash (Defra).
