Radio-tracking Birds 18 April 2007 |

A British Ornithologists' Union Workshop This one-day workshop will cover the following aspects of radio tracking:Why radio-track? Radio-tracking is a technique used to collect important behavioural and survival information about individuals. These data are used in practical conservation management as well as in complex theoretical models. This course will start by reviewing when radio-tracking is appropriate and what it can tell you. How radio-tracking works It is important to understand how radio-tracking works and how that influences tracking methods. Equipment will be described so that you can choose the best for your needs. Designing experiments Despite having the best equipment, researchers do not always realise what can be gained and have difficulty obtaining necessary data. Therefore, time will be spent explaining how to radio-track efficiently and get the best results. It is easy to learn some important lessons that will save you wasting a lot of time and money. Results from radio-tracking To demonstrate how effective radio-tracking is we will explore a local ornithological study. New discoveries, about what was thought to be a well studied and understood bird, have far-reaching conservation consequences. Radio-tracking practical You will have the chance to try out the equipment in different situations and to get expert advice on how best to radio-track in the field. Numbers and places The course will run with between 10-20 participants. Students will have priority and any remaining places as at 30 March will be allocated to non-students working from a list of reserves based on first come, first serve basis. Lunch Please note that lunch is not included in the price, and participants should bring a packed lunch with them.
